Like many cemeteries in Imam al-Shafei this one consists of a large central open-air courtyard where several graves are situated in symmetrical order surrounded by different sized domed loggias each with one or more tombs made of stone.
In this case the cemetery seems to be shared by various surnames related by marriage. In one section we find the Maher family after whom the cemetery is named. In another we find the Kilanis-Abouelhoda families of Syrian origin. The link between the two clans are the Hakki Abougabal descendants.
The gravestones sport different calligraphy each. For instance, the one belonging to Halima Hanem, who died in 1914, is in Thuluth script whereas the gravestone of Asma Hanem uses Kufi lettering. The more recent white marble and much smaller gravestones are in the currently used pseudo-Farsi script.
